Hike Prepared

Bulletin from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife:

Fall is a beautiful time to hike but remember...

⌚️ It gets dark earlier in the day, plan accordingly (and pack a flashlight just in case!)

🧤 Dress in layers + be prepared for cold weather

❄️ Know conditions will vary across the state and at different elevations

🗺 Always tell someone you are not hiking with where you are going and when you plan to return

🤝 Respect private landowners + stay on marked trails

️📵 Be prepared for no cell phone service.

🎒 Pack essential items - you should always be prepared to spend a night in the woods should anything happen (water, high-protein snacks, and a fire starter are just a few items to pack)

🌲 Share the woods with fellow hikers, anglers, hunters, wildlife watchers, trappers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Wear blaze orange!

✔️ Have a plan B if your destination's parking lot is full

👣 Keep it clean and be prepared for no restrooms
